Man admits causing death of Omar Shafiq by dangerous driving at Forest Rec Park and Ride

A man who was on trial for a murder at the Forest Recreation Ground park and ride has pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

Marius Caraleanu, 25, of Randal Gardens, Hyson Green, admitted the new charge today (July 2) following legal discussions.

Nottingham Crown Court heard he caused the death by dangerous driving of Omar Shafiq, 47, on Tuesday, October 23, last year.

The murder trial jury was told of the development and discharged by the judge from returning a verdict.

The prosecution has asked for the murder charge to lie on file.

Caraleanu will be sentenced on Wednesday, July 3, at Nottingham Crown Court.

The murder trial had heard Mr Shafiq  died as a result of horrific injuries after he was hit by a Citroën C2 driven by Caraleanu on the park and ride.

He was dragged on the underside, before he was catapulted out of the back.

He was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre but was later declared dead at 1.46am. He had multiple chest injuries and lacerations and bleeding.
