Man accused of threatening federal agent and members of Congress

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ A Palm Beach County man accused by authorities of threatening members of Congress has been charged with making threats against the federal agent who investigated the allegations.

Michael L. Shapiro, of Greenacres, called U.S. Capitol Police on Oct. 31 and, on a recorded line, threatened the agent several times, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

According to the documents, the agent had interviewed him at his apartment earlier in October for "threats to a member of Congress and his adult son." The agent "admonished" Shapiro for the threats, according to the complaint.

The complaint said the Capitol Police and the FBI had investigated Shapiro before: In January he allegedly made a threat "to another United States Representative." But the criminal complaint doesn't identify the members of Congress Shapiro allegedly targeted.

He appeared in court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty. Shapiro's defense attorney couldn't be reached for comment.
