Man accused of shooting 11yo girl appears in court

A Tasmanian man charged over a shooting that critically injured an 11-year-old girl has appeared in court.

Nathan Richard Campbell, 25, of Deloraine, did not enter a plea on Friday in the Magistrates Court in Launceston.

He has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm and recklessly discharging a firearm, in relation to injuries sustained by Phoenix Newitt, who police allege was shot as she sat in the back of a car in Stagg Court on Tuesday night.

The case was adjourned until next week.

Campbell was remanded in custody and as he was led out of the court room he yelled "I love you," to about 15 people seated in the public gallery.

One of those in the gallery yelled back "love you brother, stay strong".

Phoenix remains in a stable condition in Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital.
