Man accused of shooting 11yo girl sitting in car granted bail

Nathan Richard Campbell leaves Launceston Police headquarters.

A 25-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the shooting of an 11-year-old girl in Northern Tasmania last week.

Nathan Richard Campbell of Deloraine pleaded not guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and recklessly discharging a firearm.

Phoenix Newitt was sitting in the back seat of a car alongside her cousin when she was shot in the face about 9:00pm on August 29.

She remains in the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne in a stable condition, having awoken from a coma earlier this week.

About 15 people sat in the court's public gallery including family members and supporters of Campbell.

When he was granted bail, Campbell wiped his eyes and members of his family smiled at him.

Campbell was committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court in Launceston on November 20.
