Man accused of setting partner on fire allegedly phones her from jail

A Tasmanian man accused of deliberately setting his girlfriend on fire is back before the court, accused of breaching a restraint order by phoning her directly.

Matthew John Davey, 34, has been in custody since he allegedly doused Nicole Evans, 20, with a flammable liquid and set her on fire in Hobart's north in April this year.

He has pleaded not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.

Ms Evans suffered burns to more than half her body and spent weeks in an induced coma in Melbourne after the alleged attack.

Prosecutors successfully applied for an interim family protection order stopping Davey from contacting her, and a separate interim restraint order protecting her mother.

His lawyers argued at the time Davey was no threat to Ms Evans because they were in a loving relationship and he would be in remand while she was in hospital.

Davey appeared in court in Hobart on Thursday for allegedly breaching both those protective orders.

He allegedly contacted and spoke to Ms Evans in August from Risdon Prison via her mother's mobile phone.

He did not enter a plea and will return to court later this month.
