Man accused of rape in Edinburgh denied bail to care for mother in India

A man accused of raping a woman in Edinburgh has had his bid to be released from jail in India so he could care for his mother rejected.

Raminder Singh faces extradition to Scotland after being placed on Interpol’s most wanted list over an attack that left a woman unconscious in a pool of her own blood with a broken jaw in the city’s Pilrig Park in 2012.

The 32-year-old, who was arrested in Punjab in 2015, is also wanted in connection with the rape of a 27-year-old woman a week earlier.

A warrant for his extradition was granted in 2017, but his defence has been fighting the order in Dehli’s high court.

The Daily Record reported Singh, who arrived in Edinburgh on a student visa in 2009, requested an ‘interim bail’ order for three months so that he could return to Punjab to look after his 63-year-old mother.

India has been releasing some prisoners early in a bid to stop overcrowding in it jails during the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, judge Rajnish Bhatnagar dismissed his appeal on the grounds that those charged with terrorism or sexual offences are not eligible for release.

Singh’s defence team allege sexual offences are not covered by the current extradition treaty between India and the UK.

But prosecutors say strict proof of evidence in extradition proceedings is not legally required for it to go ahead.

The Crown Office told the Daily Record it could not comment on ongoing cases.
