Man accused of pursuit after alleged burnout in front of police

An Illawarra man has been charged and had his heavy vehicle licence suspended after he allegedly did a burnout in a Holden Commodore in front of police in a Lake Macquarie suburb at the weekend.

Police said officers had been proactively targeting dangerous and erratic driving after a spike in reports from the community recently.

They were patrolling Morisset Park Road at Bonnells Bay just after 10pm on Saturday when they allegedly saw the Commodore perform the burnout.

Police allege the vehicle sped away when they tried to stop it.

Officers engaged in a short pursuit, which ended on Maddie Street a few minutes later.

Police arrested the 47-year-old driver - a man from Dapto in the state's Illawarra region - after he allegedly failed a roadside breath-test.

He was taken to Toronto Police Station and charged with low-range drink-driving, being involved in a police pursuit and driving recklessly.

His heavy vehicle licence was immediately suspended.

Police said on Sunday the 47-year-old was granted conditional bail and will face Toronto Local Court in August.
