A 52-year-old man is accused of photographing young girls at beaches around Wollongong. (AAP)

A Wollongong man is facing child abuse material charges after allegedly taking photographs of girls at the beach.

The 52-year-old man was apprehended by members of the public on Tuesday after they allegedly saw him photographing girls while they were swimming at Wollongong Harbour.

Police arrested him, seized his phone and later searched his home.

Police say his phone contained images of girls aged between 11 and 14.

The pictures were taken in the Wollongong and Towradgi areas south of Sydney between last December and January.

He is charged with nine counts of possessing and producing child abuse material.

He will face court on Wednesday after being refused bail.
