Man charged with murder after allegedly hitting woman with sledgehammer

Police were called to the Narangba home about 4:00pm on Wednesday.

A man accused of murdering his 45-year-old ex-partner at a home north of Brisbane, picked up a sledgehammer and hit her over the back of the head, police will allege.

Shaun Sturgess, 50, was charged with murder as a domestic violence offence after police were called to a home at Narangba yesterday afternoon and found the body of Jacqueline Sturgess.

Officers commenced an investigation and found Mr Sturgess at a nearby property where he was arrested.

Police will allege the pair was separated when the woman arranged to go to the house on April 28 and pack up further goods.

Police will allege Mr Sturgess then picked up a 4-pound sledgehammer and as the woman was facing away from him struck her once on the back of the head.

Mr Sturgess dropped the hammer and left the home on foot, went to a bottle shop and then to a friend’s home, police allege.

His charges were briefly mentioned in the Pine Rivers Magistrates Court this morning and the case was adjourned until June.
