The ex-partner of a heavily-pregnant woman who was fatal stabbed in her own home has admitted responsibility for her death, the Old Bailey heard today.
Kelly-Mary Fauvrelle, 26, was eight months pregnant when she was attacked in the bedroom of her home in Thornton Heath on June 29.
Family members heard Ms Fauvrelle’s screams at around 3.30am and the postal worker died at the scene.
Her unborn baby – named Riley - was delivered prematurely but also died after four days in hospital intensive care.
Aaron McKenzie, 25, who is Ms Fauvrelle’s former partner and the father of Riley, was charged at the weekend with murder, the baby’s manslaughter and possession of a knife. He appeared at the Old Bailey this morning.
The court heard he “accepts responsibility for the death” of his former girlfriend, and is going to be psychiatrically assessed in custody.
“In terms of responsibility for the killing, there is no dispute”, said Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC, Recorder of London.
“It is accepted that the defendant takes responsibility for the death of Kelly-Mary Fauvrelle and possible psychiatric issues are being explored by the defence.”
Prosecutor Duncan Penny QC told the hearing the stabbing happened when McKenzie “entered the home address of his pregnant ex-partner”.
McKenzie, from Peckham, appeared in custody at the Old Bailey for today’s brief hearing, speaking only to confirm his name, age and British nationality.
Members of Ms Fauvrelle’s family sat in court to listen to proceedings.
Judge Hilliard remanded him in custody until a plea hearing on October 2, and set down a provisional trial date for December 2.
McKenzie has not yet entered pleas to any of the charges.
