Man accused of murdering mum Melissa Belshaw appears in court

A man accused of murdering a young mum and attempting to murder a man in Wigan is set to go on trial later this year.

Andrew Wadsworth, 36, appeared at Manchester Crown Court via prison video link for a short hearing earlier today.

Mr Wadsworth is accused of the murder of 32-year-old Melissa Belshaw - reports Manchester Evening News.

Ms Belshaw died after being stabbed at her house on Upholland Road in Billinge last week. A man in his 40s was seriously injured.

The defendant, of Cranfield Road, Wigan, has also been charged with attempted murder, threats to kill, possession of a bladed article and two counts of assaulting police officers.

No pleas were entered during a brief preliminary hearing.

He will next appear before the court for a plea and trial preparation hearing on September 14.

Judge Richard Mansell QC told Mr Wadsworth he would be asked to enter his pleas during that hearing.

A trial was also scheduled for November 16.
