Man accused of murdering motorcyclist appears in court

Jake Smith died at the scene of the incident.

A man charged with the murder of a motorcyclist at Maddingley, west of Melbourne, will remain in custody for the next five months.

Jake Smith, 24, died after allegedly being hit by a ute in Bacchus Marsh on May 20.

Police have said the ute and motorbike collided on Woolpack Road about 7:15pm.

Mr Smith died at the scene.

Pentland Hills man Damien Janson, 31, was charged with murder two days later.

It is understood Mr Janson and another 28-year-old Pentland Hills man were travelling in the ute which was driven by a 36-year-old Dandenong man.

The driver and the other passenger were arrested on the night of the incident but have been released as investigations continue.

Mr Janson appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court today and was remanded in custody to reappear via video link on October 29.

Mr Smith's family and friends were present in the court, and as Mr Janson was escorted out, the deceased Werribee man's step-mother yelled "rat".
