Prosecutors: Man accused of killing mom said it was good thing she was dead

May 22--A Southwest Side man charged with stabbing and beating his mother to death told police he "lost it" but it was a good thing she was dead, according to prosecutors.

Wojceich Sadelski, 26, is accused of killing Maria Sadelski, 54, in the basement of their home in the 4800 block of South Karlov Avenue in Archer Heights Wednesday evening, authorities said.

When his brother arrived home around 8 p.m., Sadelski attacked him with the same hammer he used to kill their mother, prosecutors said.

The brother managed to run away and call 911 at a neighbor's home, but Sadelski then tried to hit him with their mother's car, missing him and crashing into a garage, prosecutors said.

Sadelski jumped out of the car, caught up with him and began hitting him with the hammer, prosecutors said.

When police arrived, they took Sadelski into custody and went into the home, where they found his mother in the basement "with massive blunt trauma to her head and body," prosecutors said.

The brother was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in serious condition with lacerations to his head.

Maria Sadelski was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m. at the scene, according to the medical examiner's office.
