During a hearing at Preston Crown Court today (Thursday May 18, 2023), Hughes spoke only to confirm his name and enter a plea of not guilty to the charge. Members of Mr Hughes' family sat in the public gallery as Orrell appeared in the dock.
The Honorary Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, set a date for a trial to take place on December 4, 2023. He said he understood the delay would cause upset to Mr Hughes' family and put people's lives on hold, but it was the earliest available date.
Orrell was granted bail on the condition he does not enter the city of Lancaster.
