A man has appeared in court accused of killing an 11-year-old schoolgirl in a car crash.

Mr Cairns appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court today (Tuesday, July 20).

No pleas were entered.

Wearing a grey t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms, he spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth.

Mr Cairns, of no fixed abode, was granted conditional bail and will next appear at Manchester Crown Court on August 24.

Police were called at about 4.30pm on August 10 to reports of a collision involving a blue Suzuki Alto and a pedestrian on New Road, close to the junction of Hollinhurst Road.

The pedestrian – Ruby Cropper – is believed to have been crossing the road with a friend when the incident occurred.

She suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital, where she died two days later.

Following Ruby's death, her mum and two dads paid an emotional tribute to her and said they had been left "devastated" by her loss.

"As Ruby was such a kind and caring person and always helped others she has continued to do this in organ donation," they said in a statement.

"Ruby's legacy will live on and we have taken great comfort in this.

"Our family would urge anyone in these tragic circumstances to follow in Ruby's footsteps and be an organ donor.

“We are all absolutely devastated and a part of us has died today too. Our lives will never be the same again."
