A MAN accused of shooting at police with an air pellet gun - hitting two officers - during a tense siege at Maryland on Thursday has been refused bail.
Kaillin James Clancy, 30, was represented by solicitor Chris Bennett when he appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Friday charged with a string of serious offences, including discharging a firearm with intent to resist arrest, firing a firearm in a manner likely to injure, using an unauthorised prohibited firearm, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence and assaulting police causing actual bodily harm.
Mr Clancy did not enter any pleas or apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until August 27.
Mr Bennett asked Magistrate Stephen Olischlager to recommend Mr Clancy undergo a psychiatric assessment and treatment in custody.
Police said they were called to a home in Warkworth Street at Maryland about 9.20am on Thursday following reports of a domestic dispute.
When they arrived, police were confronted by Mr Clancy, who was allegedly armed with a knife.
Mr Clancy allegedly refused to come outside and two women and two children also remained inside the home, police said.
Police set-up a perimeter and during negotiations, Mr Clancy is accused of arming himself with an air pellet gun and firing several rounds at police.
Two police officers - a sergeant and a constable - were hit, police said.
Both suffered minor injuries and did not require further treatment.
In response to the shooting, police from across Newcastle swarmed into the area with specialist police units - including police negotiators, Tactical Operations Regional Support and Police Rescue - also deployed.
Police negotiators spoke to Mr Clancy for a short time before he surrendered to police about 11.15am and was arrested.
He was taken to Newcastle police station where he was charged and refused bail by police.
