A man accused of fatally stabbing his longtime partner “upwards of 150 times” at his South Shore home, then calling 911 to say he was having a “bad day,” appeared in court Thursday, according to officials.
David Cobb, 37, was charged with first-degree murder and denied bail during an afternoon at the Leighton criminal courthouse.
The body of 46-year-old Shawntrese D. Bishop was found on the floor of Cobb’s kitchen around 9 p.m. Monday after Cobb called called 911 and, “speaking quietly and despondently,” told dispatchers he was having a “bad day,” Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said.
She had been stabbed “upwards of 150 times,” prosecutors said her autopsy determined.
Bishop died of multiple sharp force injuries, according to the medical examiner’s office, which ruled her death a homicide. Police said she was found dead on the scene.
When Cobb answered the door of his third-floor apartment, responding officers saw blood on his hands and clothes and found a pair of broken, bloody scissors and a kitchen knife nearby Bishop’s body, prosecutors said.
The on-again-off-again couple had two children together, prosecutors said.
While in custody, Cobb allegedly told investigators that they had been arguing when everything “went black” and then there was “blood everywhere,” prosecutors said.
Cobb has prior convictions for domestic battery and forgery, prosecutors said.
An assistant public defender for Cobb argued that his client had called 911 and the circumstances of what happened were not clear.
Judge Mary Marubio ordered Cobb held without bail and set his next court date for Aug. 15.
