Man accused of causing brain damage, lifelong injuries to five-month-old baby is denied bail

The Ipswich Magistrates Court heard the baby suffered bruising to his brain after being violently shaken by the 23-year-old man.

A man who stands accused of causing a five-month-old baby lifelong injuries and potential brain damage has been denied bail in the Ipswich Magistrates Court.

The 23-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was allegedly caring for his de-facto partner's baby while she was out when he violently shook the child.

The baby boy was found unresponsive at a Bundamba home in Ipswich, west of Brisbane, last Tuesday and was resuscitated before being taken to Queensland Children's Hospital in a critical condition.

He remains in hospital in a stable condition.

The Lockyer Valley man was yesterday charged with causing grievous bodily harm.

Police said the baby boy suffered multiple serious injuries, including bruising to his brain.

The court heard the full extent of the child's potential brain damage won't be known until he reaches development milestones.

Magistrate Virginia Sturgess told the 23-year-old, appearing via video link, and with his parents seated in the back of the court room, this was "a very serious offence".

"The medical opinion indicates the child received significant injuries as a result of being violently shaken and has suffered what appears to be permanent injuries in terms of brain damage," Magistrate Sturgess said.

"I am of the view that [the accused] is an unacceptable risk of both reoffending and of endangering the safety and welfare of others."

Magistrate Sturgess denied the man's bail application and ordered him to be remanded in custody.

He will face court again later this month.
