A man has been arrested after allegedly breaking into the grounds of South Australia's Government House and assaulting a police security officer who was escorting him away.

The officer was doing the rounds at the governor's residence when he spotted the 30-year-old scaling a fence about 11.30pm on Thursday night.

Police security officers with the help of local patrols set up cordons on the grounds and began searching for the man, who they found lying in a garden bed along the southern wall.

As the officers escorted the man off the premises, he allegedly became argumentative, turned around and struck the Police Security officer causing an injury to his eye, nose and right side of his face.

Other patrols came to provide assistance and the man was arrested without further incident.

The officer who was struck was taken to hospital for scans to confirm the extent of the injury.

The Melbourne man was charged with being unlawfully on premises and assaulting a prescribed emergency service worker, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

He was refused bail ahead of appearing in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday.
