A man accused of ambushing his pregnant ex-girlfriend and beating her until she lost her baby has been refused bail.

Kevin Wilson, 21, of Bermondsey, south-east London, spoke only to confirm his name. He is charged with causing grievous bodily harm and child destruction over a savage attack on Malorie Bantala, 21, who was eight months pregnant.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing.

Kathryn Drummond, defending, made an application for bail, which was turned down by Judge Christopher Kinch QC.

Wilson is next due in court on 17 September for a plea and case-management hearing. A preliminary date for the beginning of the trial was set for 30 November.

Bantala left hospital on Saturday and is now recuperating, her uncle, Manzo Coxi, told the Guardian. Coxi, who is the brother of Bantala’s mother, said he did not know the details of his niece’s condition because she was staying with her father.

“She’s not working at the moment, but she’s OK now, she’s getting better,” Coxi said.
