A 44-year-old man accused of assaulting an umpire and spectator at a junior girls' football game has appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court.

SA Police allege Michael Spoehr assaulted the teenage umpire and another man at the under-17 match between Ingle Farm and Edwardstown in May.

Speaking outside court, Mr Spoehr said the incident was a "misunderstanding."

He said he was at the match "minding my own business" when he noticed some people fighting.

"I didn't do anything wrong ... it sucks, but it is what it is," he said.

The Ingle Farm man was banned for life from attending SANFL junior games following the incident.

It was the first time in the history of the SANFL junior competitions that a spectator had been given a lifetime ban.

A separate Edwardstown parent was also suspended from attending any junior matches for the rest of the season for entering the field of play, verbally abusing Ingle Farm players and engaging with umpires.

Both clubs were fined over the incident.

Mr Spoehr will next appear in court in October.
