Man accused in face-biting slayings told paramedics he ingested marijuana, alcohol

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. _ A teen accused in the fatal stabbings of a Martin County couple gave conflicting statements on the night he was taken into custody, according to a court document filed Sunday.

Austin Harrouff, 19, reportedly told a paramedic that he had "smoked some weed and drank some alcohol." However, on the same night, he told Martin County Sheriff's investigators that he had not taken drugs and dared a detective to test him for illegal substances.

Harrouff is accused of stabbing John Stevens III, 59, and Michelle Mishcon, 53, to death at their home on Aug. 15. Last week, a grand jury handed down an indictment upgrading two counts of second-degree murder to first-degree murder.

Harrouff also faces a charge of attempted first-degree murder after he allegedly attacked a man who tried to stop the murders. The story made national headlines after authorities said they found Harrouff on top of Stevens biting his face.

Preliminary tests found no traces of street drugs such as marijuana, methamphetamine or cocaine in Harrouff's system, investigators said. However, blood samples were sent to the FBI to try to determine whether any other drugs were in his system. Last week, the FBI released its findings to local authorities.

However, the Martin County state attorney's office has so far declined to give any information about the test results.

According to court documents, Harrouff told detectives he ate "humans" on the night of the attacks.

Harrouff also wouldn't release Stevens when deputies attempted to arrest him. One deputy had to use a Taser and then kicked Harrouff in the head several times, according to one report, before Harrouff was finally apprehended after a K-9 officer latched onto him.

Martin County Sheriff William Snyder told the media Harrouff was "abnormally strong" when investigators tried to subdue him.

Court documents filed Sunday indicate that Harrouff told paramedics that he wanted to die.

"(Expletive) you, just kill me. I want to die," he reportedly told an emergency medical technician.

A paramedic told investigators he heard Harrouff say: "(Expletive) America, just kill me."

Harrouff was released from St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, nearly two months after the attack.

He continues to be held without bail at the Martin County Jail.
