Crews from Bedminster and Patchway were mobilised to reports of a "chemical reaction". On arrival, crews found chemical fumes had been released following the mixture of cleaning products.

Two firefighters wore breathing apparatus for safety and used gas monitors, environmental packs and positive pressure ventilation fans to remove the substance and make the property safe.

After investigation of the scene, firefighters found that chlorine gas was produced following the mixture of bleach and lime scale remover.

In a statement, Avon Fire and Rescue said: "One male casualty was treated by the ambulance service following inhalation of toxic fumes.

"While these incidents are rare, household cleaning products do pose a risk when used incorrectly.

"We would advise residents to never mix cleaning products unless it is stated as safe to do so by the manufacturer.

"Certain products, which are safe when used alone, can sometimes cause toxic fumes or chemical reactions when mixed.

"We would advise residents to avoid mixing household cleaning products, but if you do find yourself in a situation where a chemical reaction has occurred or believe toxic fumes have been released, please call 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service."
