Man accidentally boosts lottery winnings by £12.5m in best mistake of his life

A man boosted his lottery winnings by £12.5million after playing the same numbers twice - by accident.

The lucky punter scooped the huge prize in the £37.7million ($70million) Division One Lotto Jackpot, in Australia, on Tuesday.

The "hard working man from St Alban's" bought his first ticket for the draw at the Winning Lotteries store.

But he forgot he played and purchased another slip with the same numbers at Footscray Lottery Centre, the Daily Mail reports.

He had been playing the same numbers for 30 years.

Lotto punter who scooped £3.8 MILLION jackpot thought he'd only won £3,800

The man won the jackpot along with another lucky punter, who has yet to come forward.

But because he had two tickets, he took two thirds, around £25million, of the bumper pot.

The prize swelled to £37.7m after it rolled over for seven weeks in a row.

The lucky winning numbers were 12, 28, 24, 29, 9, 18 and 25. The supplementary numbers were 13 and 31.

The ecstatic winner said: "I play every week. I have always marked my entries but I have never chosen the numbers on anything in particular. They weren't special before, but they are now.

"I need time for the news to register. I might think about retiring. First maybe a new home or a holiday.

"I'll definitely share it with my family."

Speaking on the phone to lottery bosses, the man reportedly said he was "speechless" - and asked staff if they were "kidding" - before claiming "I think I know what this means".

Lottery spokeswoman Bronwyn Spencer urged people to check their tickets in a desperate attempt to track down the other winner.

She said: "Imagine discovering you’re a midweek multi-millionaire.

“You may not think it’s possible that you could be the division one winner we’re searching for, but if you purchased an unregistered entry in this week’s Oz Lotto draw that you haven’t checked yet, you’re in with a chance.”
