Man, 87, dies in hospital after scooter crashes into creek

An elderly man has died after he crashed his mobility scooter into a creek in the Lake Macquarie area at the weekend.

Police said passers-by rushed to the aid of an 87-year-old when his scooter went off a footpath and rolled about six metres down an embankment into the creek below Freemans Drive at Cooranbong, about 3pm on Saturday.

Emergency service crews were called to the scene and arrived to find members of the public supporting the man in waist-deep water.

Fire and Rescue NSW officers carried the man to the roadway where he was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The 87-year-old was then taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition suffering hip and rib injuries.

Police said in a statement the man died in hospital about 11.30am on Sunday.
