An 86-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a decades-old murder case after a manhunt spanning nearly 40 years.

Walter James Mason, 86, was found in central Texas living under an allias of Walter James Allison by East County Sheriff deputies last week, Custer County police told CNN.

He was arrested on suspicion of murdering Daniel Mason Woolley who was found dead with a gunshot to the head in a Sport's Club bar in Clayton, Idaho more than 39 years ago.

Custer County Sheriff's Office was called to the bar on September 22, 1980, where they found the murder victim as well as a bartender, who was shot in the shoulder and a female injured by "blunt force to her head", police said.

Mason, who lived and worked nearby, was the primary suspect in the murder, they told the broadcaster.

However, he went on the run and eluded the local sheriff's office, the FBI and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game for decades.

Mason was transported back to Idaho on October 13, where he awaits trial for first degree murder.

Mason has reportedly pleaded not guilty and lawyer David Cannon has been retained as his public defender.
