A pensioner struck by a police car is in hospital in a serious condition.
The 84-year-old injured man was taken in an air ambulance that landed in the grounds of Poulton Lancelyn Primary School on Wednesday morning .
The incident is now being investigated by the The Independent Office for Police Conduct.
They said today that he is still in a serious condition in hospital.
An enormous emergency response was called to Church Road and Spital Road junction, in Wirral , yesterday after the elderly man was hit.
The independent investigators said: "We have begun an independent investigation into the actions of Merseyside Police following a road traffic incident earlier today (Wednesday 8 January) on Spital Road, Bebington in Wirral.
“From what we understand at this time, at around 11:15am a marked police vehicle collided with an 84 year-old man who had to be air-lifted to hospital for treatment. He remains in hospital in a serious condition.
“Following a referral by Merseyside Police, our investigators attended the scene and the post-incident procedures to begin gathering evidence.
"Our thoughts are with the man, his family and all those affected by this incident."
At least 13 police vehicles were at the scene following the crash yesterday.
One witness told the ECHO: "It's awful. We're so worried. It's a local man who was just making a short journey when he was struck."
The witness described seeing the gentleman "in a really bad way", adding "fingers crossed he makes it through."
