Man, 82, survives week lost in woods by eating termites and drinking own urine

An elderly man who got lost in the woods managed to keep himself alive by drinking his own urine and eating termites he scavenged.

Jose Arteiro Ribeiro and his friends had gone to a rural property in Vila Propicio, Brazil, but he left them to walk in the woods alone.

The 82 year old failed to return so his concerned pals contacted his family who called the police

His son, 39-year-old Andre Ribeiro, report his father missing and a huge search operation was launched.

Teams from the Goias State Fire Department carried out searches in the area but gave up after four days when there was no sign of him.

Undeterred, Andre and two of Jose's grandchildren carried on searching the woods every day.

Andre eventually spotted his dad sitting under a tree during a search seven days after he disappeared.

Andre told local media: "There came a point where even my family seemed to give up searching, you know?

"People didn't want me to go into the forest, they asked me to rest a bit.

"Maybe if I had rested and hadn't gone on Sunday, I wouldn't have found him.

"I said I wouldn't rest until I found him."

A video shows Andre giving his relieved dad food to eat moments after finding him.

Andre said: "When he saw me, the first thing he said was, 'I knew you would never give up on me.

"I was waiting for you, my son. I knew you would find me.'"

During his time in the woods, Jose survived by eating termites and drinking his own urine.

Andre added: "When I found him, I saw the termite mound all pierced with holes, that's where he inserted twigs to extract the termites."

During his time missing, Jose also used a lighter - the only object he had with him - to make fires to avoid being attacked by animals.

After he was found, Andre left a nephew and another young man with his father while he went to the town to seek help.

Firefighters later arrived on the scene and took Jose to the Barro Alto Hospital, where he received treatment.

He has since been discharged and is resting at home.
