Man, 79, fighting for life as inquiries continue into Jesmond hit-and-run which killed woman, 75

A 79-year-old man is still fighting for his life as police continue their inquiries into a hit-and-run which killed a 75-year-old woman.

Officers say a dark-coloured car collided with the two pedestrians on Jesmond Road, near the Punch Bowl pub, in Newcastle, shortly after 7.20pm on Saturday.

The driver of the vehicle then made off from the scene.

Emergency services arrived in the area where the woman was pronounced dead.

The man was taken to hospital with serious injuries and he remained in a critical condition on Sunday morning.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "The 79-year-old male remains is a critical condition.

"Our inquiries into the collision are continuing."

A spokesman from the North East Ambulance Service said they received a call about the collision at 7.20pm and sent three Hazardous Area Response Teams and three paramedic crews to Jesmond Road as well as a specialist paramedic.

Police are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage to come forward.

Sgt Matt Sykes, from the motor patrols unit, said: "This has been a terrible collision where a woman has sadly lost her life and a man is in hospital with very serious injuries. Our thoughts are with their family and friends at this time.

"Enquiries are now being carried out by our officers to establish exactly what has happened – but we still need to speak to people who witnessed the collision or have any information about this collision.

"If anybody saw what happened, or thinks they may have dash cam footage that could assist with us, I would ask them to contact police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 883 23/11/19 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
