A 78-year-old man was stabbed to death Wednesday evening and left in a burning home in south suburban Homewood, authorities said.

James Kerrigan was found after the Homewood Fire Dept. put out a fire about 8:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of 185th Street, the Homewood police and Cook County medical examiner’s office said.

Kerrigan was pronounced dead at 2:15 a.m. on Thursday, authorities said. He lived in the same block where he was stabbed.

An autopsy released Friday found Kerrigan died from multiple sharp force injuries. His death was ruled a homicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

Homewood police were investigating the homicide with help from the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force, police said.

Anyone with information was asked to call Homewood detectives at (708) 206-3420.
