Police are questioning a suspect after a 72-year-old man was shot in his back and critically hurt Wednesday after confronting a man who allegedly owed him money on the South Side.
The 72-year-old entered an auto dealership about 3 p.m. to demand his money from a man who then allegedly pulled out a gun and fired a shot during a dispute, Chicago police said.
The shooting happened at Dunmore Auto Sales, 7320 S. Stony Island Ave., according to a police source.
The wounded man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Merritt said.
Officers arrested a suspect shortly after the shooting, police said. No charges have been filed.
The wounded man was one of two people in their 70s shot in Chicago on Wednesday.
Later that night, a 75-year-old man was one of three people shot in the 1000 block of North St. Louis Avenue in Humboldt Park, police said. The alleged gunman was arrested.
In 2020, six people 70 years or older have been shot in Chicago, according to Sun-Times records. The oldest victim is a 79-year-old man shot May 20 in the Roseland neighborhood.
