A 71-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries after an early morning collision.

The driver of a Range Rover was involved in a collision on the A189 Spine Road in Northumberland at around 2am on Wednesday.

The car collided with the central reservation just before the North Seaton roundabout.

The driver, a 71-year-old man, was taken to hospital after he suffered life-threatening injuries.

The northbound carriageway remains closed and drivers are facing long delays.

An investigation into the collision has been launched by police.

Sergeant Craig Bartle, from Northumbria Police’s motor patrols department, is now asking for any witnesses to come forward.

He said: “This was a very serious collision which has left a man fighting for his life.

“Our investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision is ongoing and we are keen to hear from anyone who can help us build up a clear picture of the moments which led up to this incident.

“If you were travelling on the A189 Spine Road at that time and saw a Grey Range Rover travelling towards North Seaton, please get in touch with us.

"We are especially interested in hearing from any motorists that may have dash-cam footage.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police by calling 101 or using the Tell us Something page on their website quoting log 78 260521.
