Man, 70s, and woman, 20s, die in separate drowning incidents in horror day on Irish waters

A man and a woman have died in two separate drowning incidents in Ireland in the last 24 hours.

The man, aged in his 70s, passed away in Co Leitrim at around 9pm on Wednesday.

The alarm was raised after he failed to return while snorkelling at Spencer Harbour in Drunkeeran.

His body was discovered a short time later by emergency services.

A post mortem is set to take place at Sligo University Hospital.

A garda spokesman said: "On Wednesday, 21st July 2021 at approximately 9pm, the alarm was raised when a man (70s) diving (snorkelling) at Spencer Harbour, Drunkeeran, Co Leitrim (Lough Allen) failed to return to the surface.

"His body was recovered from the water a short time later by local emergency services.

"The Coroner has been notified and the body of the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at Sligo University Hospital for a post-mortem examination."

Meanwhile, a young woman has also died in a drowning incident in Co Cavan.

Gardai and other emergency services rushed to the scene of the tragedy at Lough Gowna just before 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Officers launched the operation alongside Cavan Fire Services and Civil Defence.

The body of a woman in her late 20s was recovered from the water shortly after, before being brought to Navan Hospital.

Gardai said that the Coroner has now been notified.

A post mortem exam is now expected to take place in the coming days.

It is understood that gardai are currently treating the matter as a swimming accident.

A garda spokesman said: "On Wednesday, 21st July 2021 shortly before 9.30pm, Gardaí attended at a lake in Gowna, Co Cavan following reports of a drowning incident.

"The body of a woman (late 20s) was recovered near the shoreline by Cavan Fire Services & Civil Defence a short time later.

"The Coroner has been notified and the body of the deceased has been removed to the mortuary at Navan Hospital for a postmortem examination."
