Man, 70, killed in crash in Cathedral Road, Cardiff

A 70-year-old man has died following a crash on a busy Cardiff road.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed the pensioner died at the scene of the crash, in Cathedral Road, on Thursday.

A stretch of the road was shut in both directions for around four hours following the collision. A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed the incident was reported to them at 5.44pm. An ambulance later left the scene at 6.57pm.

The spokeswoman said: "A 70-year-old male died at the scene. His body was taken to the University Hospital of Wales."

Traffic monitors reported three vehicles were involved in the crash though some eyewitnesses at the scene in the aftermath said they believed two vehicles had been involved.

Traffic was turned around and diverted as the seriousness of the crash, between Cowbridge Road East and Sophia Gardens, became apparent with eyewitnesses saying there was debris visible in the road.

The street was blocked off by several emergency vehicles including multiple ambulances, police cars, and at least one fire engine. The entrance to Cathedral Road from Cowbridge Road East was blocked by a police van to prevent more vehicles from driving towards the scene.
