Man, 62, exposes himself in Bute Park and then does weird dance with his trousers around his ankles

A man exposed himself at a popular park before doing a strange "dance" and walking away, a court has heard.

Terrence Kavanagh, 62, of North Road, Cardiff, pleaded guilty to indecent exposure and failing to comply with a sexual offence prevention order at Newport Crown Court on Monday, December 13.

The court was told the defendant breached the order as a result of the incident that took place on October 4 in Bute Park, Cardiff.

Kavanagh was said to have exposed himself as two women walked by, which led to them seeing his genitals exposed and his "trousers around his ankles".

Prosecuting Jenny Yeo told the court he later pulled his trousers up and did a strange "dance" before walking away, but the two women reported the incident to the police.

When he was later questioned by officers he told them he was "having a play".

The woman who witnessed the incident provided statements to the court, and they claimed the incident has changed their attitudes to walking in areas like parks.

One witness statement said: "I would like to be able to feel safe alone. Is it too much to ask to be safe alone?"

The other witness said she "feels like a different person" following the incident.

Defending Kavanagh Karl Williams told the court the defendant admitted his wrongdoing at the first opportunity, and highlighted that he's been working with a local church.

Mr Williams told the court the penis was "flaccid" at the time of the exposure.

"The incident lasted around a minute," he said.

"He was across the river - some 20 metres away."

Mr Williams also explained the defendant had a childhood history of bullying, and highlighted that he "has no friends."

His Honour Judge Daniel Williams told the court he had no option but to send Kavanagh to prison due to his previous offences.

Judge Williams told the defendant: "You have pleaded guilty to two offences of breaching a sexual offences prevention order and indecent exposure.

"On October 4 you went to Bute Park, and you were seen with your trousers around your ankles.

"It left two women feeling nervous."

Kavanagh was sentenced to 12 months in prison, and half of the sentence must be served in custody.

He was also told a sexual harm prevention order would be imposed for an indefinite period of time, and was ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
