Man forgets he's a dad after thug hits him on head with metal bat in own home

A man was attacked so viciously with a metal bat he still forgets he is a dad, police say.

Patrick O'Hare, 61, was left with a fractured jaw and nose and bruising to the brain after the horror assault last year.

A court heard that Jamie Duffield, 32, was seen shouting outside the victim's property before he smashed in the windows.

The attacker then used the weapon to go after Mr O'Hare, it was said, leaving him with significant injuries, reports HullLive.

Duffield, of no fixed address, was arrested at the scene in Bridlington, East Riding of Yorkshire, where he damaged a police car.

He later admitted several charges and was jailed for five years and 10 months at Hull crown court.

It was said that Duffield had been drinking heavily and had also taken cocaine at the time of the incident.

DI Sebastian Petch, of Humberside Police, said: "This was a vicious and extremely violent attack, which could have easily resulted in the death of Mr O’Hare.

"As a result of this assault, he struggles to walk, has ongoing issues with his speech and suffers significant memory loss - to the extent he had to be reminded that he was a father.

"I hope that knowing Duffield will be spending almost six years behind bars will help to reassure him and work towards getting his life back on track.

"I would also like to thank the lady who got in touch at the time of the attack.

"Thanks to her quick thinking and action, we were able to get officers to the scene and arrest Duffield before he caused any further injuries."

Duffield pleaded guilty to assault causing grievous bodily harm, criminal damage and possession of an offensive weapon.
