Passers-by help lift car off man killed in Hobart city crash near school

The man was rushed to hospital but died on arrival.

People on a busy Hobart street have rushed to help emergency workers lift a car off a man who was fatally hit while getting into a parked car while his wife was waiting inside.

The man, a 61-year old from Mangalore, north of Hobart, died following the accident on Davey Street in Hobart this morning just after 9:00.

Tasmania Police said they believed he was attempting to get into the passenger's side of his car, while parked on the one-way street.

Police said the man's wife was in the vehicle at the time of the accident, which happened near St Michael's Collegiate School.

The man was trapped under the passing car, with emergency services personnel, aided by passers-by lifting the car off the man.

"Removing the car off the [man] was the only possible way to be able to provide treatment to him," Inspector Robert Blackwood said.

"I think it was at least 40 minutes he was being worked on at the scene, before he left [for hospital]."

The man's wife left the scene and was being comforted by family.

"She's very distraught at the moment," Inspector Blackwood said.

"We've spoken with both the school and the [Anglesea] barracks ... we've asked the students to stay inside for the moment while we undertake the investigation and speak with witnesses."

The man was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital but was pronounced deceased after arrival.

Police said the area in the city would remain closed for several hours while the investigation proceeded, but that they do not think drugs, speeding, or alcohol were contributing factors to the crash.

The driver, a 37-year-old Swansea woman, is helping with the investigation, and police are calling for witnesses to come forward.
