A 61-year-old man has died eight months after being beaten into a coma in a sickening racist attack.
Yao Pan Ma, 61, was set upon while collecting cans in East Harlem, New York last year.
Tragically he died on New Year's Eve, police have announced.
The attack on April 23, 2021, was part of a spate of attacks in the city appearing to target Asian Americans.
Mr Ma had previously worked in a local restaurant but was laid off due to the Covid pandemic.
His devastated wife, who he has been married to for 31 years, called for the man who did this to her husband to be made to "pay".
A video released by police at the time showed a man slamming his foot down on Mr Ma's head before nonchalantly walking off.
Witness Armetha Knight, 37, told the New York Daily News Mr Ma was "minding his business with his shopping cart" before the unprovoked assault.
"When he got to the scaffolding, an African-American man attacked him from behind," she said. "He hit him from behind and then curb-stomped him."
Following the police appeal Jarrod Powell, 49, was arrested.
He faces two felony assault as a hate crime counts and an attempted murder charge.
Following Mr Ma's death, it is expected that his charge will be upgraded, NBC New York reports.
Mr Ma's 57-year-old wife Baozhen Chen told the New York Post: "Please capture him as soon as possible and make him pay.
"My husband is a hard-working man. He picks up bottles to help pay the rent and the bills. He is innocent.
"He did not do anything wrong. He is a very kind person. He is quiet. He doesn't cause trouble to make people mad."
