Man, 60, dies on way to hospital after horror one-car crash in Borders

A 60-year-old man has died as he was being taken to hospital after a smash involving his Mercedes car in the Scottish borders.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on the A72 near Neidpath Castle, Peebles, at about 10.25am on Tuesday.

Police said only one car was involved, a black Mercedes C class, and the sole occupant was pronounced dead when being taken to hospital.

Officers have appealed to anyone who has information or dashcam footage from around the time of the incident to contact them.

Sergeant Ross Drummond said: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died and our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have been in the area at the time and saw what happened or anyone with dash-cam footage which may assist to contact us.

"I would also appeal to anyone who saw the black Mercedes C class in Peebles prior to the crash to get in touch."

The road was closed for almost four hours between Kingsland Primary School and Meldonfoot/Lynesmill, and reopened at 2.45pm.

A Police Scotland statement read: "Road Policing officers are appealing for information following a fatal road crash on the A72 near Neidpath Castle.

"The incident happened around 10.25am on Thursday, 16 August, 2022, and involved a black Mercedes C class. Emergency services attended but the 60-year-old male driver was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.

"The road was closed for around three hours 45 minutes and re-opened around 2.45pm."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting incident 0862 of 16 August, 2022.
