Man, 57, dies after a fire broke out at 'Seven Sisters' tower block in Rochdale

A man has died after a fire broke out at one of the 'Seven Sisters' tower blocks in Rochdale.

The 57-year-old man was rushed to hospital after the blaze broke out on College Bank Way on Monday morning.

Police have said he has since died after suffering from smoke inhalation.

Six other residents also suffered from the effects of inhaling smoke, while five residents in total were rescued from the Mardyke block in the early hours of Monday morning.

Police have arrested a 42-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life.

Both have been released on bail.

The fire was contained to a bedroom in the building on the fifth floor of the building.

Val Hussain, fire service group manager for Bury, Oldham and Rochdale, said on Monday: "Crews were called to the scene of a fire on the fifth floor of a high-rise premises.

"They worked exceptionally hard dealing with the significant fire, putting out the fire and carrying out rescues very quickly.

"The fire was contained to the bedroom of the flat, with no external fire spread.

"The fire was out at 5.50am but one fire crew remains at the scene to continue monitoring."
