Man, 56, dies while climbing up Mount Brandon in Kerry

A 56-year-old man has died after falling ill while climbing Mount Brandon in Kerry.

The man was navigating his way through the Faha route with four other people when he took ill shortly after 1.30pm.

RTE report that those accompanying the man continued to administer CPR until the mountain rescue services arrived at 3.30pm.

Kerry Mountain Rescue was tasked to attend and they were assisted by the Dingle Coast Guard.

The Rescue 115 helicopter from Shannon was also summoned to help with the operation. However, due to poor visibility, it was unable to assist.

Dingle Coast Guard journeyed up the mountain by vehicle until conditions worsened while rescuers continued on foot.

The Coast Guard located the man with assistance from ambulance paramedics but he was declared dead at the scene.

His cause of death has not been identified, but it is understood to have been sudden.

Members of Dingle Coastguard carried the deceased to the base of the mountain where the body was handed over to the Ambulance Service.

Gardaí confirmed that the man’s body has since been taken to Kerry University Hospital morgue where a post-mortem will be conducted at a later date.

The deceased's family members have also been contacted.
