Man, 55, arrested after climbing over rails of Sunderland's Northern Spire Bridge

A man was arrested after climbing over the railings of a Sunderland bridge.

The Northern Spire Bridge was temporarily closed after officers were called to the scene at around 2pm on Tuesday.

A 55-year-old man was brought to safety and the bridge reopened.

The man was arrested on suspicion of public nuisance but has since been released with no further action.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: “Shortly before 2pm on Tuesday, police received a report of a man on the wrong side of the railings on the Northern Spire Bridge, Sunderland.

“The bridge was temporarily closed while officers attended the scene.

“The man was brought to safety soon after and the bridge was reopened.

“The man, 55, was arrested on suspicion of public nuisance but has since been released with no further action.”
