Man, 53, died from blood clot induced by cocaine use, inquest hears

A 53-year-old man's cocaine use contributed to causing a blood clot that killed him, an inquest has heard.

An inquest opened into the death of Karl Steven Orrell, at Bolton Coroner's Court, today (February 24).

Mr Orrell, of Leigh, was found unresponsive on November 23 2020, police coroner's officer Stefan Wilson told the court.

Mr Wilson said: "Mr Orrell was admitted to Royal Albert Edward Infirmary on November 23 2020, having been found unresponsive, following a possible drug overdose.

"He had a previous medical history of COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease], ischemic heart disease and was an intravenous drug user.

"Mr Orrell was given treatment at the hospital and was declared life extinct at 11.50am."

Mr Wilson said that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Orrell's death.

Senior coroner for Manchester West, Timothy Brennand told the court that following a post mortem, the provisional cause of death has been recorded as 'pulmonary thromboembolism' - a blood clot in the lungs.

Mr Brennand also said that Mr Orrell's 'cocaine use' had been recorded as a contributory factor.

He requested statements from Mr Orrell's GP, Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, the police coroner's office, and any community-based agencies that treated Mr Orrell for drug addiction.

The inquest was adjourned until April 13.
