Man, 52, injured by firework at vigil tragically dies in hospital

A man who was injured by a firework at a vigil in Oldham has tragically died.

Officers were called to the scene of the incident on Huddersfield Road, at the junction with Sandbed Lane, in Delph, just before 9pm on November 19.

A 52-year-old man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police said he was 'injured by a firework' in an 'isolated incident' near the Delph and Dobcross Cricket Club.

In an update today (December 1), the force said the man sadly passed away in hospital last Friday (November 26).

An investigation is ongoing and police are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

Photos from the scene at the time of the incident indicated that the vigil was being held for Reiss Jarvis and Karl Young.

Both died when a vehicle they were travelling in came off a carriageway and hit a tree in the Delph area on November 10.

Reiss, aged 21, and Karl, aged 34, both worked at the Grill at Number 20 in Oldham town centre.

Reiss had previously worked as an actor and starred in a drama broadcast on the BBC.

Any witnesses to the incident at the vigil, or anyone with information, is being urged to get in touch with GMP.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said: "Police were called shortly before 9pm on Friday 19 November 2021 to a report of a man injured by a firework during a vigil on Huddersfield Road, at the junction with Sandbed Lane, near to Delph and Dobcross Cricket Club.

"Emergency services attended and a 52-year-old male was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"However, he sadly passed away in hospital on Friday 26 November.

"Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time and the investigation is ongoing."
