Man, 50s, dies after getting into difficulty in water at Forty Foot, south Dublin

A man has tragically died after getting into difficulty in the water at the Forty Foot in Sandycove, south Dublin.

The man, aged in his 50s, was taken from the water off Sandycove before being rushed to hospital at around 2pm on Sunday.

The Dun Laoghaire Lifeboat crew, Irish Coast Guard, and Rescue 116 helicopter all helped get him from the sea.

A garda spokesperson confirmed the tragic news and said a file will now be prepared for the coroners court.

They said: "Gardai in Dun Laoghaire were called to an incident at the 40 foot this afternoon, Sunday 29th September, 2019 at approximately 2.30p.m.

"One man (late 50s) got into difficulties in the water and a number of people went to his assistance.

The Coast Guard arrived and took the injured man to Sandy Cove Point where he was removed by Ambulance to St. Vincent's Hospital. He passed away later this afternoon.

"A file will be prepared for the Coroners Court. Investigations ongoing."
