Man 50s dies after assault outside pub in Foigha, Co. Longford

A man has died following an assault which took place outside a pub in Co Longford.

The incident occurred at around 5:30pm on Thursday night in Foigha, Co. Longford.

The man, 50s, was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar with serious injuries and was pronounced dead on Sunday afternoon.

A man in his 30s was arrested in connection with the incident and on Saturday appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice.

In a statement, gardai said: "Gardaí from Ballymahon Co Longford attended a serious assault incident which occurred outside a licenced premises in Foigha, Co. Longford on Thursday evening 1st August 2019 at approximately 5.30pm.

"A male (50s) was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital, Mullingar with serious injuries and was pronounced dead this afternoon, Sunday August 4th 2019.

"Shortly after the incident on Thursday 1st August, a male in his 30s was arrested in connection with this incident and detained at Longford Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.

"He appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice, Parkgate St, Dublin 8 yesterday, Saturday 3rd August 2019.

"A Post Morten examination will be carried out tomorrow, Monday 5th August 2019 and the local Coroner has been notified.

"Investigations are continuing."
