Man, 50s, arrested after male, 70s, left fighting for life with serious head and spinal injuries following assault in Ballybough, Dublin

Gardai have arrested a man in his 50s in connection with a serious early morning assault that took place in Dublin.

A man in his 70s is currently fighting for his life after suffering serious spinal and head injuries during a serious assault in Ballybough.

The incident took place at Courtney Place at 2am on Saturday morning and the scene remains preserved where investigations are ongoing.

The man was taken to The Mater Hospital following the attack where he remains in a critical condition.

Another man, 50s, was arrested on Saturday afternoon and is currently detained at Mountjoy Garda Station under Section 4, Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

A spokeswoman for the Gardai said that they are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the assault or who can assist Gardai in the investigation to contact Mountjoy Garda Station on 01 - 6668601.
