A man has been arrested over the fatal stabbing of a 16-year-old in Yirrkala in the Northern Territory.

The 49-year-old handed himself in to police on Friday afternoon following community advice, NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement.

Wednesday's incident involved up to 100 people and three men - aged 18, 40 and 45 - were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A number of events in the East Arnhem region, including a football match, were cancelled after the fatal stabbing.

On Thursday, Assistant Commissioner Michael White said the response from the community had been "one of calm" following the 16-year-old's death.

"I understand there was some tension prior to the incident yesterday but that will all form part of the investigation," he said.

PFES said the arrested man has been taken to Darwin to be interviewed by detectives.
