Man, 46, dead after assault at house in Co Kilkenny

A man who was assaulted at a house in Kilkenny city has died.

The shocking incident happened at approximately 4am on Thursday at a premises on the Castlecomer Road.

The 46-year-old man was rushed to St Luke’s Hospital where he later died at 11pm last night.

A man in his 30s was arrested yesterday in relation to the incident.

He is currently being held at Kilkenny garda station.

A woman in her 20s who was detained yesterday has since been released without charge.

A garda spokesman said: "A Post Mortem examination will take place later today, Friday February 7. The office of the State Pathologist has been notified.

"A male in his 30s and a female in her 20s were arrested in relation to this incident by investigating Gardai.

"The female was released without charge yesterday, Thursday, February 6 pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions, the male in his 30s remains in Garda custody under the provisions of Section 4, Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Kilkenny Garda Station.

"The scene is preserved for a technical examination. The investigation is ongoing and further updates will follow."
