A murder investigation is underway in Scotland after a man was shot dead inside a home.

The 42-year-old man was fatally shot by a gunman in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire at 4.50am today.

Emergency services rushed to the home in Nithsdale Road but the man died at the scene, Daily Record reports.

Detectives have launched a murder investigation and the gunman remains at large.

A large police cordon is in place as forensic officers gather evidence.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Around 4.50am on Sunday, 24 May a 42-year-old man and 46-year-old woman were within a house in Nithsdale Road, Ardrossan when a man entered the house and discharged what is believed to be a firearm before leaving the house.

"The 42-year-old man was then found with serious injuries and died at the scene a short time later.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances of the incident and are currently searching the surrounding area for the suspect and viewing CCTV in the area."

It is understood the woman who was with the man at the time of the shooting was not injured.
